On August 6 in Cefalù the SS. Salvatore, patron of the town, is celebrated, among the various playful events, there’s a specific and ancient challenge called “la Ntinna a mari”.
This is a play which 17 guys or men take part of, belonging to families of fishermen from Cefalù. Participants must walk on a wooden beam long 16 meters, fixed on the jetty and made smooth with animal fat, and manage to take the flag placed on its end. The face of the patron saint is portrayed on the flag.
These events have a dual purpose: to celebrate the patron of the town and to entertain and involve the audience, for this very reason some inhabitants seize the opportunity to wear clothes unsuitable for the occasion or even ridiculous clothes.
The “Ntinna a mari” is an integral part of the culture of Cefalù and highlights typical values of the Sicilian culture: religiousness, fraternity, warmth, cheerfulness and respect for traditions, for sure a show you can’t miss!
